Foods That Are Toxic To Dogs

Foods not safe for dogsDid You Know Many Human Foods And Spices Are Not Safe For Your German Shepherd, Or Any Breed Of Dog?

Many people spoil their pets and cannot resist the begging puppy dog eyes.

I know I have been a sucker to those sweet pleading eyes more than once. However as much as we all love our pets there are many common foods, spices, etc. that we humans eat that can be deadly to our beloved German Shepherds or any dog for that matter, and many may surprise you.

Please be aware that the list below was compiled by using many different online sources, and not all of the these sources are in complete agreement with one another.

Please let this be a general guideline for you follow, and always get the opinion of your veterinarian.

If your dog does happen to eat any of the following then call your veterinarian immediately.

1.       Chocolate. It contains theobromine a chemical that is toxic to dogs.

2.       Caffeine. This chemical is found in coffee, tea, and most soft drinks.

3.       Avocados. Every part of an avocado is known to be toxic including the leaves and bark from the tree itself.

4.       Grapes and Raisins. It is unknown why this is toxic to dogs, but it will cause sudden kidney failure in dogs if ingested.

5.       Garlic. (I get questions on this one often. Just Click Here to go directly to Poison Control to see why it is dangerous for dogs.

6.       Onions. Onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic to cats and dogs. The ingestion of onions causes a condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by damage to the red blood cells.

7.       Walnuts or Macadamia Nuts.

8.       Gum, Candy, Mints, Toothpaste, and Mouthwash. These things are toxic due to the fact that they contain Xylitol which is a sweetener that causes a sudden release of insulin that causes liver failure in dogs.

9.       Alcohol. Alcoholic beverages can be deadly to your dog especially depending on the size of the dog.

10.     Apple Seeds. The apple itself is safe, it is only the seeds that are toxic.

11.     Apricot Pits.

12.     Cherry Pits.

13.     Certain Mushrooms, so it’s best to stay away from all mushrooms.

14.     Mustard Seeds.

15.     Peach Pits.

16.     Potato Leaves and Stems.

17.     Rhubarb and Leaves.

18.     Salt. (I get questions on this one often. Just Click Here to go directly to Poison Control to see why it is dangerous for dogs.)

19.     Tomatoes including Leaves and Stem.

20.     Milk and other dairy products. Dogs are lactose intolerant, so they don’t have the necessary enzymes to digest dairy foods.

21.     Plums.

22.     Persimmons.

23.     Pears.

24.     Yeast Dough.

25.     Baking Powder.

26.     Baking Soda.

27.     Nutmeg.

28.     Chives.

29.     Citrus Oil Extracts.

30.     Corn on the cob. Corn is actually fine, but the cob, does not digest and can cause a blockage in the intestines.

Again, please be aware this may not be a full comprehensive list so always check with your veterinarian before you feed your pet any human food to make sure it is safe for them.

Thanks for the info!  Rule of thumb is always feed your dog dog food.  Make their treats at home, follow a recipe and your dog will be happy and healthy.  Feeding dogs scraps just encourges bad behaviour anyway.

I just want to mention I am all new to blogging and site-building and really savored this web page. Probably I’m likely to bookmark your blog post . You amazingly have good well written articles. Thank you for sharing your website.

I appreciate the listing but I always wonder about the dosage. For instance apple seeds are toxic to humans too but  have eaten whole apples including seeds many times, and for long periods and was not affected, before I knew they were toxic. So it it really a question of dosage. Without dosage I don't know what  this means or what value it has. If anyone can help please respond.

admin says:

Dosage will depend on the size of your dog. I recommend printing off this list and discussing everything with your vet, or avoid everything listed here just to be safe.
