Hemangiosarcoma Diagnosis

The Only Thing Wrong With Dogs Is That They Don’t Live Forever.

Dogs don't live foreverIt’s time to share the news. My beautiful German Shepherd daughter Vegas has been diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive incurable cancer of the blood vessels.

She just turned 11 years old on March 1st, 2014. Due to her diagnosis this will more than likely be the last birthday she celebrates with us.

Like most dogs with this horrible cancer there was virtually no warning. One day Vegas simply refused to eat, but other than that she was acting normal in every other way.

We took her to our vet and they found she had a cracked tooth and recommended a dental cleaning, and extraction of that tooth. They proceeded to do bloodwork which came back completely normal.

We scheduled her dental cleaning, and the morning of her dental her vet called me and asked if she could do some x-rays because of Vegas’s age, and she just wanted to be sure that nothing else was wrong before putting her under anesthesia. I agreed to the radiographs and the results came back questionable.

The vet then recommended and ultrasound. The ultrasound showed us that our German Shepherd Vegas had two very large tumors on her spleen. Due to these findings the dental cleaning was cancelled and we scheduled a splenectomy or removal of the spleen, so the tumors could be biopsied.

Happy Birthday German ShepherdThe surgery went great, and we waited four days for the results. The results were the worst possible diagnosis as far as I was concerned; terminal incurable cancer called hemangiosarcoma.

Since the diagnosis my goal has been to every day spoil my sweet Vegas rotten, and make every day she has left as great as possible.

The time she has left is up to her, however the vet expects somewhere between 1 to 3 months. I just want whatever time she has left to be quality time.

The hardest part about animals is there life spans. It is so hard to say goodbye. Luckily I will always have the hundreds of pictures and videos taken throughout her life to look back on, when her time does come.

Here is the video of her 11th birthday party, where she gets a dog safe peanut butter cake.  I hope you enjoy it. I know she definitely enjoyed her cake.
